An American Working in New Zealand: Nov. 2003 to July 2004

The Tongariro Crossing

November 24th, 2003 Posted in Activities, Travel

Known as “The Best One Day Walk In New Zealand,” The Tongariro Crossing goes through Tongariro National Park, which is just south of Lake Taupo. I stayed in Tangari with the intention of doing the crossing, but the weather was questionable. I took the bus that morning and teamed up with a guy named Bob from Boston and his sister. Well, initially is was raining and windy. Then it got cold. So, we went uphill through wind, rain, and cold for 4 hours. We smelled sulfur at the top, and had a few surreal foggy moments on the way there. Soon after it cleared up, and we saw the second half of it, including a few large lakes and some hot springs, along with a grey thermal river. We proceeded down, enjoying the newfound sunshine, and ended up in a forest for the last mile of so. Even with the bad weather, it was a great walk, and certainly an adventure. I highly recommend it:)
