Return of the King rules with 11 Oscars!

March 3rd, 2004 Posted in Activities, Culture

For the first time since The Last Emperor, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won every Oscar it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director for Peter Jackson, Best Adapted Screenplay, and 8 others for a grand total of 11 Oscars, putting it in company with Titanic and Ben-Hur for the most Oscars ever. More signicantly, this is the first time the Academy has given the Best Picture award to a Fantasy or Science Fiction movie!

Fantasy is less real, isn’t it? Well, from a certain point of view. It is not uncommon that Fantasy and SciFi are able to grapple with themes that a so-called reality story couldn’t. Lord of the Rings deals with very powerful notions of evil, race relations, and perseverance without hope. We are ablet to trascend this present reality and come back with ideas that help us live in the world we live in. Fantasy indeed!<
