Fracture
April 1st, 2004 Posted in CultureWhen I heard about the movie Fracture, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool to go to a world premiere of a movie in Wellington. Wait, already did that. Well, to see a movie in Wellington that is world premiering. Um, to see a movie made in New Zealand…that, well, yes, is shot in Wellington. Oh, did that too. Sigh.” A workmate and I went to the Fracture world premiere on April 1st, 2004. It also started Paramount Theatre’s World Cinema Showcase 2004.
As is common with World Premieres (well, as I’m coming to expect), we heard some words from the Producer and Director, and got to see the two primary cast members: Kate Elliot and Jared Turner. The movie started off sluggish but soon picked up pace. Since it was shot in and around the city of Wellington, New Zealand, there were a few times where the location was very familiar, so much so that I forget the story for a instant. This is was definitely an independent film, but the acting is pretty good, and the story draws you in after awhile, so you actually care about the characters. The story involves the struggles of two families and how their lives intersect. This is not a light-hearted film, like the recent Whale Rider. It is much closer to New Zealand’s Once Were Warriors, in that it has some violent and complicated relational themes. Life is often hard though, and this movie, based on Maurice Gee’s novel Crime Story, is a sad movie, but along with that, it shows how some family members stick together, and that is always beautiful to see. Go to IMDB.com to read my review of Fracture (using the alias LightRaider).
